Molding Mishap

On Thursday, Jonathan and I went to Home Depot for paint and crown molding to start our guest bedroom project. We came home all the wiser after learning some very important truths about molding:

1. When molding comes in 16-foot pieces, it'd be a good idea to get it cut in-store rather than haul it around in your shopping cart, taking ridiculous wide turns while just barely missing merchandise on every aisle.

2. Even when you have a large utility truck, it would be a better idea to have a semi truck for transport. When that is not possible, refer to #1: get the modling cut in-store.

3. It'd be an even better idea to use twice as many bungee cords to secure the molding to your (now admittedly smaller) truck than the few you use first. It'd also be a better idea to use a tarp to protect your vehicle from potentially damaging white scratches.

4. It would be smarter not to cringe and scream when your molding slides down the side of your vehicle during transit and subsequently sideswipes a nearby telephone pole. There's nothing you can do at that point.

5. It would be a fabulous idea to wear proper coats and gloves on a cold night when you are restrapping the molding to the truck in the Costco parking lot, or when you are running out into the busy street to rescue a missing piece of cracked molding.

6. As a passerby, it would be wise not to get behind the truck with five 16-foot pieces of molding protruding from the back, due to 1) the OBVIOUS danger it could pose to your car, and 2) the EXTREMELY slow speed at which that truck is going.

7. Even when you make it home safely on your second attempt with the modling, it would be wisest to have referred to #1 in the first place.

  1. I think it's hilarious that all your mishaps happened either in the store or on the way home! You guys must be better at actually installing crown molding than we are!

  2. We are planning on doing our guest bedroom this summer too...so we will keep this in mind!

Last time Jason bought "too long" boards at Home Depot he put them in the X-terra (he swears they were going to fit) and carefully slid them up on to the passenger side head rest. Then he managed to slam the back hatch and send the board crashing into the front windshield. 8 hours later he was home with the boards and a shiny new windshield! =0)

  3. I think that you should put the molding in your buggy instead of your shopping cart! haha! :)

  4. I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time, but glad you can laugh about it now. :) And thanks for sharing these tid-bits....one of our next projects is molding, so we'll take these lessons learned into account!
